Echoes of the Lotus: A Tribute to Zhang Daqian

For the Research Center of the Sichuan Fine Arts Institute, I designed a series of small hanging installations located at the former residence of Zhang Daqian. The work draws directly from the palette of his iconic lotus leaf paintings, translating his mastery of color into a physical form.

• The Palette: Through layered ink washes and precise moisture control, the pieces render the deep greens and mineral blues of the original artwork, capturing the rhythm of 'ink dividing light and shadow.' These tones are accented by the pale rouge pink of lotus petals.

• The Heritage: Rooted in the traditions of the Jiajiang papermaking village, the installation once again embraces paper as a core medium—honoring the region’s intangible cultural heritage.

• A Rediscovery: I never had the chance to photograph the final, polished site and the project slipped into memory—until a recent conversation about Zhang Daqian brought it back to light. Looking back at these raw phone photos, I’m reminded of how endlessly captivating these colors remain.
