Startling Grace: Thousand Strands of African Padauk

Inspired by the intangible heritage of Shuixiu (water sleeves), this installation deconstructs the fluid trajectories of movement to reshape them into physical form. As light glides over the wood’s natural rippling texture, it evokes the image of a Cantonese opera warrior’s feather crest piercing the void, or the silver waterfall of a Huadan’s sleeve bursting forth to the rhythm of gongs and drums.

The Vision & Material:

• Fluidity in Wood: Overlapping depths of grain create a rhythmic vitality that blurs the line between the organic material and a fleeting illusion.

• Temporal Rift: Suspended in mid-air, the veneers capture the trajectory of sleeves slicing through space. The African Padauk exudes a warm amber glow, while Macassar ebony shimmers with a luminescence that feels like the lingering presence of a dancer.

• The Setting: A suspended art installation designed specifically for a high-end wooden furniture exhibition hall.
