A Dazzling Art Installation Made of Discarded Phone Cases | Sunshade

This half-ton sunshade installation is crafted from 2,300 reclaimed phone cases from Casetify, reimagined as a medium for environmental advocacy. The recycled cases were meticulously cut into over 10,000 unique fragments, then stacked and secured across both sides of the umbrella’s canopy. To complete the form, the case rims were sliced into thousands of delicate strips and applied to the top surface and the central column.

In my creative vision, the umbrella serves as a universal symbol of protection—a sanctuary from the elements. I wanted to take that familiar image and pivot it toward environmental advocacy, using it as a metaphor for how we must shield 'Mother Earth' from the growing threat of pollution.

The goal is to show that sustainability isn't just about massive shifts, but the cumulative power of small, daily actions. I’ve titled the piece 'Bu Susu,' an onomatopoeic name that mimics the rhythmic rustling of the wind through the canopy, and I hope anyone who sees it feels that sense of childhood whimsy while reflecting on our shared responsibility to the planet.
